I recently installed the Matter Over Thread Smart Door Lock (Handle) from SmartSetup on my front door, and after a couple weeks of real-world use, I thought I’d share my honest thoughts. The installation was super straightforward — no drilling or complicated wiring. It fits most standard wood doors (about 35–60 mm thick) and simply replaces your existing handle/lock without a huge hassle. The real selling point for me was the Matter-over-Thread support. Once paired through my Apple Home setup (with a Thread border router like HomePod mini), the lock showed up immediately and reliably in the app without the need for cloud-based control or a distant hub. That’s big — if your Wi-Fi drops, the lock still responds because it uses Thread’s local mesh network. Also priced very well compared to other locks in the market.

Overall a pretty good lock. It’s a tuya based lock and the only issue I had was the spindle was slightly oversized for my existing backset (which is a standardised size for all handles/locks these days), I had to file out the backset by .5mm each side. Not sure if installation problem on my end but the handle on one side pulls the latch back further than the other (again, using existing backset rather than one provided).
I only wanted the lock in home assistant/apple home so did not set it up with tuya, I did manual programming then shared to home assistant. What I’m not sure of is if I paired the lock to tuya first if I could enable passage mode permanently on after unlocking. With pairing direct to home assistant the lock relocks within a few seconds after unlocking to which you can then hit 5 then # to turn passage mode on till the next lock. There is no option to keep it on in HA. Pairing direct to apple home provides even less options, though you get what you need I suppose. If not for the fingerprint sensor I likely would have removed this lock again as the passage mode thing without it is a dealbreaker. We have it on a sleepout and if the occupant needs to come inside in the early hours while still half asleep, it locking instantly is not convenient.
Operation wise it seems to work well and have had no complaints, no news is good news here.
